KASONGO: The 'Wan-Tam" School Captain

“Kasongo: The ‘Wan-Tam’ School Captain” is the electrifying lead story in the collection Kasongo & Other Stories. Set in a fictional yet eerily familiar Kenyan mixed boarding school, this symbolic tale mirrors the nation’s political heartbeat through the rise and fall of a once-bullied, soft-spoken student named Kasongo.

Branded ‘Wan-Tam’—a streetwise phrase for One Term Wonder—Kasongo’s unexpected ascent to school captaincy is both inspiring and cautionary. Backed by a coalition of overlooked students tired of systemic bullying and toxic prefects, Kasongo’s rise is fueled by dreams of justice, representation, and real change. But once in power, the boy who once embodied hope begins to mirror the very forces he promised to fight—plunging the school into new depths of tribal favoritism, mismanagement, and fear.

Told with humor, vivid imagination, and powerful symbolism, the story transforms the school into a metaphor for Kenyan society, with every dormitory, classroom, and assembly ground representing a county, a tribe, or an institution. It is a coming-of-age satire that confronts questions of leadership, betrayal, identity, and the price of power.

Featuring memorable characters with creative Kenyan names, sharp dialogue, and deeply rooted cultural undertones, Kasongo is more than a school story—it is a national mirror held up for all to see. It challenges readers to reflect on who we elect, why we elect them, and what happens when power corrupts even the purest intentions.

Between Her Thighs, A Nation

“Between Her Thighs, A Nation” is a bold, evocative, and unapologetically Kenyan literary masterpiece that fuses politics, sensuality, and social commentary into one unforgettable narrative. Woven with rich metaphor and fearless storytelling, this book dares to explore the intricate intersections between power and pleasure, womanhood and nationhood, desire and destiny.

At the center of the story is a woman—enigmatic, powerful, and symbolic—whose body becomes both battleground and birthplace of the nation’s deepest secrets. Through her thighs pass not just lovers, but legacies. Politicians whisper manifestos between sheets, rebels take refuge beneath her warmth, and generations are conceived alongside betrayal, ambition, and revolution.

Yet, this is not just a story of seduction. It is a piercing allegory of how nations are built, bought, and broken—often on the backs (and in the beds) of women. Through poetic language and gripping scenes, the author holds a mirror to Kenyan society: its corrupt elites, transactional relationships, weaponized femininity, and the eternal resilience of womanhood.

From smoky backroom deals in Nairobi to quiet betrayals in village homesteads, from love songs in bedsits to screams on ballot boxes, “Between Her Thighs, A Nation” is a journey through intimate politics and political intimacy.

Provocative yet profound. Raw yet redemptive. This book is for the brave, the curious, and the conscious. It does not whisper—it roars.

Unbroken

“Unbroken” is a powerful and soul-stirring novel that tells the intimate story of resilience, womanhood, and the silent wars fought behind closed doors. Set against the backdrop of modern-day Kenya, the story follows Sheila Akinyi, a brilliant, spirited woman navigating a world that constantly tries to dim her light.

From childhood trauma to marital heartbreak, from corporate glass ceilings to cultural expectations, Sheila’s journey is a masterclass in survival. She is bruised but not bowed, scarred but not silenced. As society tries to define her worth by her pain, Sheila reclaims her voice, her dreams, and ultimately—her power.

Told through poetic prose and unfiltered truth, “Unbroken” dives into the emotional and psychological toll of being a woman in a society that demands perfection but offers no protection. Yet, at its core, this is a story of hope. Of healing. Of rising.

Whether you’re a woman seeking your reflection or a reader yearning to understand the quiet strength behind every Kenyan heroine, “Unbroken” will grip your soul, challenge your perspective, and leave you deeply moved.

ODM: Between Ballots & Betrayals

This book is a sweeping political chronicle of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), tracing its evolution from a defiant symbol in the 2005 constitutional referendum to a dominant, if troubled, force in Kenyan politics. Drawing on speeches, court records, leaked cables, and eyewitness accounts from rallies and boardrooms alike, Steve Biko Omondi pieces together the story of a movement born of betrayal and public outrage, and sustained by resilience, symbolism, and relentless reinvention.

The narrative begins in the hopeful aftermath of the 2002 election, when the National Rainbow Coalition’s promise of reform was quickly undermined by broken agreements and elite power games. The failed Bomas Draft and the “Banana-Orange” referendum become the crucible in which ODM is forged, transforming a simple fruit into a national emblem of resistance. From here, the book follows ODM through its defining moments: the unity and fracture of the Pentagon alliance, the violent aftermath of the 2007 election, the uneasy half-loaf politics of the Grand Coalition, the 2010 Constitution’s mixed legacy, the bitter contests of 2013 and 2017, and the unexpected rapprochement of the 2018 Handshake.

Along the way, Omondi exposes the party’s internal contradictions, idealism versus ambition, unity versus factionalism, and examines its enduring hold on Kenya’s political imagination even amid electoral defeats. The final chapters explore ODM’s place in the Gen-Z–driven protest era, its struggle for relevance in a changing political landscape, and its potential role in the country’s next chapter of reform.

Both a political history and a meditation on power, ODM: The Orange That Refused to Rot captures the triumphs, betrayals, and reinventions of Kenya’s most iconic opposition movement, revealing how a colour, a fruit, and a rallying cry became a lasting force in the nation’s democratic journey.
